Have you heard of VegLife or VeganFest?
If you have, you probably know my friend Amy Luebbert. It shouldn’t surprise you that she is a vegan, and has been for 16 years! She does a lot of educating and is using VegLife Des Moines, a new 501c3 to bring people together around a common interest. Not everyone who attends events are vegan; some are simply veg-curious or total foodies.
I asked her if she would share five ways to get more connected to the veg scene in Des Moines, so here you go you, ladies + gents.
1. Get connected online
Follow VegLife Des Moines on Facebook and Instagram or browse our website. Join local vegan Facebook Groups like Des Moines Area Vegan Friends and Plant Strong Des Moines. These two groups offer online community at its best. If you’re looking for general resources, tips on where the find the newest or cheapest vegan eats, or restaurant recommendations, the Des Moines Area Vegan Friends group is for you. If you eat plants for health reasons, check out the supportive group at Plant Strong Des Moines.
2. Attend a vegan potluck hosted by Food Still Matters on the first Thursday of every month.
This series offers a casual, low commitment way to meet new people and try loads of vegan food. The potlucks are typically attended by 50+ people so the food options are plenty and people who attend range in their eating habits. They welcome anyone to check it out a few times without bringing a dish to see what it is all about!
3. Join the Vegan Restaurant Tour with 14 locally owned restaurants participating
You can participate in this tour throughout February + March! Some names you’ll recognize as vegan hot spots and others typically never offer vegan options. We’re excited for people to try vegan dishes to see how delicious and accessible they are! Help us transform the Des Moines restaurant scene by following the tour and voting for vegan options with your dollars.
4. Attend Peace Not Pork, the compassionate alternative to Baconfest
The event will be at Peace Tree Brewing in the East Village on Feb 17 from 1-3 p.m. We will showcase stories about pigs from the Iowa Farm Sanctuary and even have some great vegan give aways from the Iowa Food Coop. Join us for an afternoon of vegan snacks and brew! Tickets are free, but necessary. Grab them here.
5. Check out VeganFest on March 24
Des Moines VeganFest is the place to check out vegan food, wares, beauty products and services! The event is from 11am-5pm with over 35+ vendors! Three will be 5 hours of speakers on topics ranging from health, food justice and compassionate veganism. The event is free to enter! Food vendors will be selling $1 sample bites and larger portions for under $8.
