When I “got serious” about yoga back in 2013, there was a really deep, inner experience I had that I desperately wanted to share (which is really hard to do by the way). I signed up to do the work for trade program at Power Life Yoga downtown, so I could have free yoga if I worked three hours a week.
There isn’t really a way to describe some of the transformations that happened on my yoga journey so I’ll use some key words to help describe the experience:
freeing, stronger, empowered, equipped, more compassion, less judgment (of myself and others), joy, general wellbeing
Committing to 200-hour teacher training and then teaching yoga wasn’t about me. It was about connecting individuals to “self-actualization” and helping them feel incredible. I wanted to connect yogis with the world around them. I am constantly working to build community in this city, where people of all ages, sizes and incomes are going to the same events, the same parks, the same grocery stores.
This is an opportunity to bring our Des Moines community together in new parts of the city, old parts of the city, buildings, parks, abandoned warehouses, vacant spaces.
Pop Up Yoga provides yoga throughout DSM at little to no cost. Yoga is generally expensive. Drop-in costs are around $15 and a monthly membership is easily around $100/month. I understand that businesses need to make a profit, but there are so many generous instructors willing to donate their time, to expand their teachings to new communities and open the eyes of people across the metro to a really amazing experience.
Pop Up Yoga DSM was birthed in my mind almost two months ago after reading about Pop Up Yoga NYC in Yoga Journal. Now I’m building our team to execute pop ups in our awesome city. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter to see where we will be popping up this summer. Want to be a part of bringing yoga to the city? Want to sponsor this effort? Know an awesome place for a class? Email email@example.com or PM us on Facebook.
Pop Up Yoga DSM supports existing yoga studios by promoting their events, sending students who come to pop up events their way and continuing to broaden people’s yoga experiences. Pop Up Yoga DSM isn’t about competing with other studios. It’s about connecting our people. Let’s rock and roll and get on our mats.
